About Early Learning/Literacy
The Early Learning/Literacy Specialist ensures students receive high-quality literacy instruction, leading the development and improvement of instruction in Sturgeon Lake Central School as well as Sturgeon Lake Education Alliance partner schools. This is accomplished through training, observations, model lessons, feedback conversations, data analysis and more. The Early Learning/Literacy Specialist serves as the literacy content expert and provides support on curriculum, high-quality interactions, and the research-based effective instructional practice of teaching reading and will spend most available time in classrooms working directly with teachers to improve student achievement and overall success. The Early Learning/Literacy Specialist is also the Daycare and HeadStart liaison.
Annette Nelson
New to the Sturgeon Lake Education Alliance Fall of 2024, Annette Nelson is the Early Years and Literacy Specialist. Growing up in the small northern hamlet of Weyakwin, Saskatchewan with proud traditional Cree parents and a mother who was an educator influenced Annette in a variety of ways. Living a balanced lifestyle practicing mindfulness, experiencing nature and enjoying many outdoor activities and learning about culture and traditions in our communities are among her favorite pleasures.
Currently Annette spends much of her time working with Sturgeon Lake Central School administrating reading assessments, compiling data, mentoring and supporting educators with literacy and providing materials relevant to literacy development.
As a Literacy Specialist Annette can offer workshops and training with DRA (Developmental Reading Assessments), LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) and support educators with Guided Reading, Running Records, Daily 5 and Literacy Stations.
