Tansi Tanya McCallum nitha nisithikason, Wapawikoscikanik oci.
Hi my name is Tanya McCallum, I am a Woodland Cree from Pelican Narrows, Sask. I have always had a high interest on physical and environmental science, I am a past graduate from the Integrated Resource Management program where I obtained certificates and a diploma. After a few years of working, I went back to school and obtained my B.Ed through GDI, SUNTEP, where I graduated with great distinction with Native Studies as my major. I am a recent graduate from the Indigenous Land-Based Education Masters program through the U of S.
I was fortunate to have been raised by my grandparents who were hunters and gathers and lived off the land. At a young age, I learned to appreciate nature and what it has to offer. It is this passion I instill in my children and my students.
My activities outside of work consist of camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking, yes, pretty much anything that has to do with the outdoors. I currently work as a Land-based teacher, where I instill, in my students the significance of language and culture revitalization and I advocate for environmental education. My goal is to incorporate Indigenous Land-based education into the existing Saskatchewan curriculum and to recognize the significance of passing on traditional knowledge on our students. Therefore, the students will become stewards of our sacred Mother Earth. In addition, it is a way to connect the students back to the land, back to the ways of our ancestors.
Furthermore, I am a mother of two beautiful, ambitious daughters, who seem to take on the same interests as their mother. Attaining a higher education is what I continuously preach to my daughters. I think is it imperative for me to be a positive role model for my daughters and my students, as well as show them the essence of hard work and determination.
